Over 20 years ago, when I moved from my first home, one of my greatest sources of stress was having to leave behind all the flower gardens I loved and had worked so hard to create.
A few years before that move, these beautiful flowers had mysteriously appeared in my gardens. I remember telling my grandmother about them, and she explained that the birds had brought them to me. Back then, they never showed up in any of my gardening books or magazines, and this was before the internet was what it is today, so I never knew what they were called or where to find them. All I knew was that I loved them and hated the thought of leaving them behind.
Since I was moving in August, many of the flowers had already gone to seed, including these. I gathered as many seeds as I could and brought them with me to my new home, scattering them throughout every flower bed and hoping at least a few would take root.
Thankfully, they did. More than 20 years later, I’m still enjoying their blooms every year. And every year, I find myself thinking about the flowers the birds brought me, the conversation I had with my grandmother, and how grateful I am that those seeds took hold all those years ago.
Sometimes the smallest seeds carry the biggest memories.
Oh, and they’re called Love-in-a-Mist.
Did You Know?
Blue is rarest flower color. Less than 10% of plants have blue flowers and it isn’t common in animals, either.
